To build Corewell Health Place, an existing manufacturing building had to be torn down. The site formerly housed a brass stamping plant with enormous concrete foundations to support the machinery, all of which had to be removed. In many situations, demolition waste is diverted to landfills. However, Rockford’s project team quickly realized the concrete foundations could be crushed and recycled as site material for the new building. In total, more than 20,000 tons of concrete — double the weight of the Eiffel Tower — was removed from the ground and crushed to be recycled.
