Gabryelle Giddens | Women in Construction Week

Meet Gabryelle Giddens, assistant project manager at Rockford, Bachelor’s in Civil Engineering, Michigan State University.

Please briefly describe what you do for Rockford. I am an assistant project manager in Rockford’s Detroit office. Some of my responsibilities include assisting with the management of project documents, RFI’s and submittals, cost management and coordinating activities happening on project sites and with the client.

What is your favorite part of your job/role? My involvement on a project from start to finish. I enjoy being able to assist in any challenges that might arise, and problem solve to eliminate issues. I am proud to contribute to the progress of construction and witness a design come to life.

What has been the most rewarding or memorable moment of your career? The most rewarding moment has been being able to say to friends and family “Hey, look at this project that I was a part of creating!” It’s gratifying to see the completion of a project you spent numerous hours, months, or even years on become a place for community members to enjoy.

What does being a woman in the construction industry mean to you? I am bridging gaps by being a woman in a predominantly male field and making a difference in how the world views the construction industry. Women bring different perspectives, views, mindsets and voices to the construction industry that are valid and important. Most importantly, being a woman in this field means representation – showing young women and little girls, who may feel like this industry wasn’t meant for them, that it is.

What advice do you have for others interested in working in the construction industry? Always be open to learning and gaining experience. There are so many different people, professions, cultures, etc. involved in construction who can offer a learning opportunity, and your voice and experience equally matter. Additionally, take initiative in getting outside your comfort zone to help you excel in this industry – if you don’t try, you may never know how much you enjoy being involved.
