Making a Statement About Sustainability

“A story has no beginning or end; arbitrarily one chooses that moment of experience from which to look back or from which to look ahead.”

This is, in part, what we are doing with the launch of our official sustainability statement – choosing a moment in time to look back on our sustainable achievements and toward the future of high-performing buildings.Years ago, we recognized the importance of sustainability and the impact we could have as a major employer, developer, builder, and property manager. So we began tracking data about how we operate – every year committing to better practices for conserving energy, resources, and reducing waste.

Moving to our current LEED Platinum corporate offices was a major result of that commitment. We utilized an intentional and collaborative design and construction process to meet our own goals and objectives related to the Triple Bottom Line – people, planet and profit. But even as we move forward with our green goals, we’ve found it important to look back on a year-by-year sustainability comparison. Without annual data, how can we expect to set our goals moving forward into the future?

That’s why, this year, we launched our first public sustainability statement. This is a comprehensive corporate overview of Rockford’s sustainable goals, accomplishments, and areas for improvement. It represents a collaborative effort by those who share a personal commitment to creating a better, healthier environment for us all. Rockford’s achievements are made possible by the people who walk during lunch, the members of our ride sharing program, our jobsite recycling champions, and many others.

As with anything in life, it sometimes feels like we’re not doing enough, like we’re not making the immediate impact we dreamed we would. Looking at these numbers shows me how much we have done…and how much more we have to do.
