Faces of Rockford: Chaoying Zhang on the Power of BIM/VDC

At Rockford, technology and collaboration drive how we deliver complex projects. Leading that effort is Chaoying Zhang, BIM/VDC manager. Her role ensures that every large-scale project — from industrial facilities to higher education buildings — begins with a clear, coordinated plan that keeps construction on track.

Building Information Modeling (BIM) and Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) allow Rockford to build projects digitally before breaking ground. By integrating architecture, structural elements and mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) systems into a shared 3D model, Zhang helps align project teams around a single source of truth. That coordination prevents costly clashes, reduces rework, shortens schedules and delivers stronger value for clients.

Zhang serves as a connector between clients, designers, engineers and MEP contractors.

Connecting People and Systems

Zhang’s work goes beyond managing models and data. She serves as a connector between clients, designers, engineers and MEP contractors. Her ability to unite those groups ensures client goals remain at the center while technical details are coordinated behind the scenes.

“Our clients rely on us to think ahead,” Zhang said. “BIM and VDC give us the tools to solve problems early, so construction runs smoothly. It’s about providing a better service and a better outcome.”

With a background in engineering and management, Zhang combines technical knowledge with collaboration. By aligning multiple disciplines before construction starts, she helps Rockford deliver projects that perform on day one and for decades to come.

Collaboration at the Core

For Zhang, teamwork is the most rewarding part of the process. She knows that every successful project depends on communication and coordination, whether between a designer finalizing drawings or a trade contractor fabricating materials. That collaborative approach reflects Rockford’s identity and ensures every stakeholder has a voice in the process.

“It means we grow as a team, and as a company,” Zhang said.

Pride Beyond the Project

For Zhang, the impact of her work extends beyond construction. Driving past a completed Rockford project, she feels proud not just of the building, but of the teamwork and foresight it represents. Even her five-year-old son recognizes the Rockford logo, a reminder that her work is shaping communities in ways her family can see and feel.

Building Futures

Zhang embodies Rockford’s values — integrity, innovation and collaboration. By leading our BIM/VDC efforts, she helps deliver projects that are smarter, safer and stronger. Her leadership ensures that every system, team and detail comes together to support client goals.

“At Rockford, it’s not just a job,” Zhang said. “It’s about building something bigger together. I’m proud to be part of the Rockford family.”
